Je n’ai pas toujours été à l’aise avec l’utilisation des mots “coaching“ et “coach“ dans leur expression non-sportive.
C’est pourtant cette version qui m’intéresse, celle que j’ai décidé de pratiquer professionnellement et qui consiste à accompagner les individus dans leurs efforts personnels.
À la fin de ma précédente carrière de manager, je savais à peu près ce qui m’animait et ce que je voulais apporter aux autres sans pour autant savoir qu’un métier répondant à mes ambitions existait.
Quand il m’a été confirmé que, ce à quoi j’aspirait professionnellement et humainement relevait du coaching, ma première réaction fut une belle moue bien dubitative.
Le terme me renvoyait à de bons gros clichés, à une image péjorative due à mon ignorance, d’une part, mais aussi au galvaudage du terme, utilisé à toutes les sauces, pour tous genres de disciplines, sans respect des règles.
Le problème est bien là, tout cela est possible notamment parce que la discipline n’est que très partiellement réglementée.
De nos jours, rien ni personne ne peut vraiment empêcher quelqu’un de se déclarer coach en développement capillaire (par exemple, en espérant que ça n’existe pas !).
Pendant ma formation, quand des connaissances me demandaient ce que je devenais, il me fallait trop souvent, après avoir prononcé le mot “coaching“, prendre le temps d’expliquer que je ne comptais pas prendre la tête d’une équipe de foot, ni faire faire des pompes et des abdos à domicile pour des cadres très dynamiques.
Il ne s’agit pas de trouver un nouveau nom au coaching pour tenter de se défaire de certaines assimilations hasardeuses. Il est question de mettre en avant ce qu’est vraiment le coaching. Sur les bases de quelles vertus et quelle déontologie il se pratique.
Petit à petit, il nous faudrait parvenir à rendre distinct ce qui relève réellement du coaching et ce qui ne l’est clairement pas. Cela passerait notamment par une uniformisation de sa définition, un consensus quant à une identité propre du coaching et le libérer de cette vision fausse d’une discipline au carrefour de toutes les autres disciplines de l’accompagnement.
A terme, il nous faudrait pouvoir dire me manière affirmée : « la manière dont tu exerces ta discipline ne peut pas lui permettre d’être considérée comme du “coaching“ car tu ne respectes pas tous ces X critères, ni la déontologie qui lui est propre ».
